What is Chiropractic?
Chiropractic is a natural approach to supporting the nervous system and improving communication between the brain and body. By stimulating sensory receptors in a highly specific manner, chiropractic care “hydrates” the nervous system, providing it the input it needs to function at its best. This has nothing to do with hearing a “pop” and everything to do with nervous system regulation which helps the body respond, adapt, and heal more effectively.
How Does It Work?
A Doctor of Chiropractic performs precise adjustments to joints or bones throughout the body. These adjustments can be delivered in several ways:
By hand (High-Velocity, Low-Amplitude):
A quick, controlled movement to restore joint function.
With specialized instruments:
Tools such as the Activator or Arthrostim deliver targeted, gentle impulses.
Gentle, respiratory-assisted adjustments:
Using the natural rhythm of your breath, the doctor guides the bones with gentle pressure for a subtle, supportive correction.
History of Chiropractic
-
… Harvey Lillard who had been nearly
deaf for 17 years. After Palmer adjusted a misaligned vertebra in Lillard’s spine, Lillard reportedly
regained his hearing, a dramatic event that became the foundational anecdote of chiropractic. In its
early years, the majority of chiropractors were actually trained medical doctors who became
interested in spinal manipulation as a therapeutic method, seeing its potential to restore health by
addressing nervous system function. However, chiropractic quickly faced intense opposition from the
American Medical Association (AMA), which saw it as a threat to its monopoly on healthcare. The
AMA led a decades-long campaign to discredit and suppress chiropractic, including filing numerous
lawsuits, lobbying for restrictive state laws, and creating propaganda to undermine the profession.
Evidence of this intentional effort came to light in 1987 during the landmark antitrust case Wilk v.
AMA, in which internal AMA documents revealed that the organization had engaged in a coordinated
plan to “contain and eliminate” chiropractic through illegal means, confirming that the opposition was
not merely skepticism but a deliberate attempt to shut out the profession from mainstream
healthcare.
Today, chiropractic is widely practiced around the world and works collaboratively with the medical
community, serving millions of patients each year. Research and patient reports consistently show
improvements not only in pain and mobility but also in sleep, energy, mental clarity, and overall
quality of life. Chiropractors are recognized as healthcare professionals in most countries and are
accepted as a safe, effective, and patient-centered approach to supporting the body’s natural ability
to heal. They work alongside medical doctors (MDs), osteopathic physicians (DOs), and other
healthcare providers to deliver integrative, comprehensive care.
